About Me

Joshua with students

I'm Joshua Bailey, a SkillsUSA Texas chapter advisor from District 11. I teach Cybersecurity at Veterans Memorial High School in San Antonio, and I'm running to be your District 3 representative on the SkillsUSA Texas Board of Directors.

My journey with SkillsUSA began when I witnessed students transform from hesitant learners to confident professionals through competition. Since 2014, I've served as a SkillsUSA Texas Technical Chair, and now as a Chapter Advisor, working to bridge the gap between education and industry needs.

Having hired, trained, and managed employees in industry, I recognized that many students graduate without the practical skills employers require. This motivated me to get involved and help create better pathways to success for our students.

Why This Matters

My proudest moments come from watching students achieve what they never thought possible. One student entered my classroom planning to drop out of high school. With a difficult home life, he didn't see value in "wasting time" at school.

Through our program, he discovered a path to a better future, traveled outside our city for the first time to attend SkillsUSA conferences, and is now studying cybersecurity in college. His SkillsUSA medal remains on his wall.

These transformations drive my commitment to this organization. I've experienced SkillsUSA at its best and during challenging times. With the challenges advisors and students faced at last year's state conference, I chose to be part of the solution rather than just be disappointed.

I believe in addressing problems directly while respecting the organization's important work.

My business experience has shown me that organizations improve when they listen to feedback and implement practical changes. As a board member, I'll advocate for advisors struggling with paperwork, students waiting hours at competitions, and industry partners seeking better engagement.

SkillsUSA Board Candidate

Election Update

Thank you so much for your support in my run for SkillsUSA Texas Board Region 3 representative. Unfortunately, I won't appear on the ballot. The board recently created a new policy requiring regional candidates to interview with and receive approval from an elections committee of four current board members. Despite meeting all criteria in our published bylaws, I did not receive their recommendation.

Although I believe this policy wouldn't hold up against our bylaws if legally challenged, I see this as a clear sign from God directing my time and resources elsewhere for now.

While I'm disappointed that I won't have the chance to be your voice on the board, I strongly encourage you to remain vocal about your concerns at every leadership level, including the board itself. In speaking with the committee, it was clear they undervalue detailed planning and member feedback, going as far as telling me, "I love that you're so organized; I'd want you to clean my car!"

Your voices are essential to improving our organization. Thanks again for your trust and support!

I am so disappointed 😞.
Agreed!, so sorry Josh best to you!
Sad news, but you will have new doors open with welcoming arms. Was not quite happy of how they did quiz bowl, but I won't be doing skills next year because of the grade level. I'll be teaching. So I will get my break cause sometimes it can be so frustrating. It is definitely their loss.
That's so unfortunate they miss out and so will our student leaders when those who are in positions of leadership based on merit and not qualifications fail to see truly qualified candidates as yourself. God has something much better just watch. Thank you for your commitment to the students of this poorly ran organization.
I am so very sorry that you weren't on the ballot. The SkillsUSA organization would have benefited greatly had they selected you. You can always count on my friendship and support. I joined SkillsUSA so my students would have additional competitions to demonstrate their coding skills. For some, having competitions is what they need. They see how their coursework applies to things outside of the classroom. I am looking for additional ways for my students to compete. If / when I find one, my time in SkillsUSA may end.
True. God's plan is always a better one. Trust the process. Good luck to you and your students.
Thanks you too. Don't let weak power hungry fools ruin your week. They probably have nothing else going from them and can be miserable by themselves. You probably would have done a lot of good for skills but their loss. Lord knows they NEED more organization it has been getting better in the 4 short years I've been going.
